\u00a0We invite PhD students and early career researchers in sociology, political science and economics to apply for the Winter School on \u201cResearching Social Insecurity in Europe: measures, drivers, policies<\/strong>\u201d to be held at Polytechnic University of Milan, Italy (Monday 30 January to Wednesday 1 February 2023).<\/p>\n

The aim of the Winter School is to provide young scholars with an understanding of the spread and dynamics of social and economic insecurity in its various manifestations and the implications for inequalities in Europe. The School will showcase state-of-the-art research by leading scholars on a range of closely connected topics: social and economic insecurity, inequality, poverty, new social risks, and public policies dealing with such issues. Speakers include Laura Bernardi<\/strong> (University of Lausanne), Conchita D\u2019Ambrosio<\/strong> (University of Luxembourg), and Philippe Van Kerm<\/strong> (LISER and University of Luxembourg).<\/p>\n

The School will (i) discuss the nature of social and economic insecurity; (ii) evaluate measurement approaches; (iii) identify the research strategies best able to capture its main drivers; (iv) analyse the distribution of insecurity between and within social classes, with special emphasis on the middle class; and (v) assess the role of welfare and labour policies in preventing the spread of social insecurity and\/or mitigating its adverse effects on individuals. The School\u2019s format will be a mix of keynote addresses, workshop presentations, hands-on mentoring sessions (both theoretical and methodological), and opportunities for participants to present one\u2019s own work.<\/p>\n

The Winter School is sponsored by ESPAnet<\/strong> (European Network for Social Policy Analysis), and Espanet Italy, and is supported by the RISIng<\/a> project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Education and Research. The project investigates the crisis of the middle classes in Italy and Europe by focusing on the spread of insecurity. The project is led by Costanzo Ranci<\/strong> (Polytechnic University of Milan), and involves four research units from University of Trento (led by Stefani Scherer <\/strong>and Paolo Barbieri<\/strong>), University of Rome-La Sapienza (led by Michele Raitano<\/strong>), University of Milan (led by Matteo Jessoula<\/strong>), and Polytechnic University of Milan (led by Manos Matsaganis<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Applications<\/strong><\/p>\n

Candidates are invited to send their CV, a summary of their research topic (max. 500 words) and a motivation letter to rising-prin@polimi.it<\/a> by Monday 17 October 2022. Successful candidates will be notified within a week or so.<\/p>\n

There is no participation fee. Participants will fund their own accommodation and meals.<\/p>\n
