Microsimulation enables users to evaluate the effect of changes in public policies or broader developments (such as for example a rise in unemployment) on the income distribution and on government budgets, also identifying ‘winners’ and ‘losers’. The public policies evaluated may be either actual or hypothetical, in the latter case taking the form ‘what if’ questions. Spatial microsimulation makes possible the evaluation of the effects of public policies or broader developments at local level by creating geographically referenced microdata that refer to a particular local area.
